Once a Wildcat, Always a Wildcat!
Early Beginnings and the 1926 Building
Following the initial settlement of the town of Altha around 1902, the community recognized the immediate need for formal education. The first major milestone occurred in 1926 with the construction of a dedicated brick high school facility. This structure features:
-
The "White Building": A beloved local architectural landmark, it originally housed 16 classrooms and a central auditorium.
-
Depression-Era Renewal: In 1939, the campus received modern expansions and renovations funded through the New Deal’s Public Works Administration (PWA).
Modern Progress and Resilience
The modern era of Altha Public School is defined by a beautiful transition from the old to the new, showcasing the community's dedication to its students.
-
The 2017 State-of-the-Art Campus: In 2014, the Florida Legislature approved the construction of a brand-new facility. Following a groundbreaking in 2015, the state-of-the-art, 120,000-square-foot K-12 campus officially opened its doors to students in January 2017, bringing cutting-edge technology and modern athletic facilities to Altha.
-
Honoring the "White Building": For a short time, the new campus shared its grounds with the beloved, historic 1920s "White Building." Though the historic structure weathered many generations, it sustained severe, irreparable structural damage during Hurricane Michael in October 2018. To ensure campus safety, the community bid a fond farewell to the local landmark when it was safely demolished in August 2019.
Today, the new campus stands as a proud symbol of Altha's resilience, carrying the timeless Wildcat legacy forward in a world-class educational environment.
