This past Tuesday the Lady Wildcats traveled to Vernon for the Girl’s 1A District Tournament, where they faced Cottondale in the first round of play. They were led in scoring by Nirvonna Brown who scored 16 points along with Emma Dalton who helped to lead in scoring by hitting 3 3’s allowing the lady cats to jump out to a 19 point lead early in the 3rd . The Lady Wildcats coasted to the win 50-36.
Thursday night the girls traveled back to Vernon for the 2nd round of districts. The game was a thriller. There were many back and forth plays in the final two minutes. Nirvonna Brown made key free throws down the stretch to pull out the victory 40-39. She finished with 11 points and Emma Dalton led the team with 14 points. Sneads was a well coached team that never quit. The game came down to the final play with 15 seconds left on the clock. Sophomore leader Amber Waldron jumped a pass to allow Nirvonna Brown to secure the game winning steal. Our girls had to fight hard and this win was the first time in history that the Altha girls basketball went to the championship.
Friday night the Lady Cats traveled back to Vernon one final time to take on the Chipley Tigers for the District 1A District Championship the Lady Cats lost by a final score of 64-29. However, they were still able to bring home some hardware. This was the first time in Altha girls basketball history they made the district Championship. The Lady Wildcats also made another first for the program. They qualified for the regional tournament for the first time in the program's history. Coach Kent Rogers added “Out of my four years of coaching, this is the first year the girls were able to compete in the district tournament. This is a remarkable achievement given how young this program still is.” They look to keep making history as they will rematch the Chipley Tigers this Thursday at 7 in Chipley. The winner will face the winner of Bozeman/Port Saint Joe.
